Christmas tree disposal in Vienna: 609 collection points open until January 17 – free and climate-friendly.

After the holidays, Vienna’s environmentally friendly Christmas tree collection begins again. Until January 17, 609 collection points will be available throughout the city. They are open around the clock and marked with signs reading “Christbaum-Sammelstelle” (Christmas tree collection point).

Trees can also be dropped off at all MA 48 waste collection sites throughout the year. Important: Christmas tree decorations, tinsel, and hooks must be removed beforehand so that the trees can be recycled.

The locations can be easily found on the Vienna city map or in the 48er app with integrated route planner. If you have any questions, please call the waste disposal hotline (01/546 48) or visit this link provided by the City of Vienna.

Around 175,000 Christmas trees are disposed of every year – that’s about 772 tons of wood. MA 48 uses them for climate-neutral energy production: the trees are used to produce electricity and district heating, enough to supply 1,200 households with electricity and 2,200 households with heat for a month.

Some of the trees also end up as feed for goats at the Rautenweg landfill site. In this way, the City of Vienna ensures that no tree has grown in vain, even after the festive season.
